Community Mural Project – Walpita Cooperative Building

Date: December 2019
Location: Walpita, Homagama, Sri Lanka
Project: Community Mural Painting – Cooperative Building
Project Type: Community Art & Youth Initiative
My Role: Volunteer Artist / Painting Support
Project Overview
In December 2019, I participated in a community art project initiated by children and young people in Walpita, my home village in Homagama. The project aimed to improve and beautify the local cooperative building through a series of large-scale wall paintings.
The initiative brought together children, youth and other members of the local community, creating an opportunity for them to work collectively on improving a shared public space.
My Contribution
I supported the project by personally taking part in the drawing and painting of the murals, working alongside the children and other community members.
The work included preparing the surrounding area and creating murals inspired by Sri Lankan identity, history and cultural heritage. The completed artwork incorporated themes such as the Sri Lankan national flag, historical and cultural imagery, Buddhist architectural elements and other locally meaningful visual concepts.
Key Contributions
- Participated directly in drawing and mural painting
- Worked together with local children and young people
- Supported the improvement of a community building
- Encouraged teamwork and creative participation among local youth
- Helped incorporate Sri Lankan cultural and heritage themes into the artwork
Community Significance
The project was more than an effort to decorate a building. It provided an opportunity for children, young people and adults from the village to work together toward a common goal, while encouraging creativity, teamwork and a sense of responsibility for their local community.
For me, the project also represented the connection between my creative background and community service activities. Using art as a practical contribution allowed me to support a youth-led initiative within my own village.
Significance in My Journey
This project is an early example of an approach that would continue to influence my later work: bringing together young people, creativity, Sri Lankan history, cultural heritage and community participation.
It remains a meaningful part of my community-service journey because it demonstrated how even a relatively small local initiative can encourage young people to become actively involved in preserving, improving and taking pride in their own community.
