Providing Clean Drinking Water to Wewa Medagama Vidyalaya

Access to clean drinking water is a basic need for every child. I have always been concerned about the long-term effects that chemicals entering soil and water sources may have on communities, particularly in agricultural areas. I believe that the consequences of the decisions we make today may eventually be inherited by generations that come after us.
One of the difficulties faced by the children of Wewa Medagama Vidyalaya in the Ampara District was the lack of a suitable source of drinking water. After learning about the situation, we provided the school with a water purification system through the Hadawathinma Daruwanta project, giving the children access to filtered drinking water at school.
This project has a special place in my memories because Wewa Medagama Vidyalaya became the Fourth school where I was able to help address a drinking-water problem. Whenever I look back at these projects, they bring me an immense sense of satisfaction. Even a relatively small contribution becomes meaningful when it provides something useful in the everyday lives of children.
I first learned about the school's water problem through Nishanka Kaushalya. Sadly, she passed away in 2025 after suffering from kidney failure. Knowing that information she shared with me eventually led to something beneficial for these schoolchildren gives this project an even more personal and emotional significance. I remember her with gratitude whenever I look back on this work.
My sincere thanks go to the WE-11 Cricket Team and everyone else who supported this project under Hadawathinma Daruwanta. May the merit of this contribution be shared with Nishanka Kaushalya and with everyone who helped make clean drinking water available to these children.
