"Hadawathinma Daruwanta" - School Bags for Children of Kaikaru Primary School, Mannar

Date: 09 January 2022
Location: Kaikaru Primary School, Mannar
Project: Hadawathinma Daruwanta
Activity: Donation of school bags
This was another beautiful and memorable day in my journey of community service. On 10 October 2022, through the "Hadawathinma Daruwanta" school bag programme, we were able to carry out another project for the children of Kaikaru Primary School in Mannar.
We had received requests from many schools in remote and underserved areas. Among them was a request from the 542 Brigade Headquarters, which I did not want to set aside. Based on that request, we selected Kaikaru Primary School and decided to provide school bags to its children. I also respectfully remember Venerable Hemmathagama Dhammarathana Thero for his contribution in coordinating this initiative.
After a journey of approximately seven hours and despite several difficulties along the way, we reached Mannar. The officers and others associated with the 542 Brigade welcomed us warmly and had organised the programme with great care and order. Their support helped make the occasion a memorable one.
The most touching part of the journey, however, was meeting the children. Although there was a language difference between us, it was never a barrier to experiencing their warmth and affection. The time spent with them and the happiness surrounding the occasion made the difficulties of the long journey worthwhile.
Wherever they live in this country, whatever language they speak and whatever religion they follow, they are all our children. Every one of them deserves the opportunity to learn, progress and build a better future. My wish that day was that each of these children would grow to become a valuable person who contributes positively to Sri Lanka.
