HJM Community Milk Rice Dansala in Rawathawaththa, Moratuwa

On 12 August 2019, the HJM team organized a traditional milk rice distribution event, known in Sri Lanka as a "Kiribath Dansala", along Galle Road in Rawathawaththa, Moratuwa. The programme was led by two members of our team, Mr. Sumudu Silva and Mr. Samanlal, with the participation of fellow HJM members, including myself.

The tradition of organizing a dansala holds a special place in Sri Lankan culture. Beyond the simple act of distributing food, it represents generosity, hospitality, community spirit, and the willingness to share with others without expecting anything in return.

The event was held along Galle Road, one of the main roads passing through Moratuwa, providing an accessible location for residents and people travelling through the area.

An important aspect of this initiative was the collective participation of HJM team members. Having worked together on various community service projects, our team also took part in smaller activities that encouraged direct interaction with the public and strengthened relationships among volunteers.

Mr. Sumudu Silva and Mr. Samanlal took the lead in organizing the event, while the involvement of other team members reflected the collaborative approach that characterized many of our social service activities.

Throughout my involvement in voluntary community work, I have valued both large-scale welfare projects and smaller acts of service. While initiatives such as housing assistance, educational support, and community development addressed specific needs, programmes such as this milk rice dansala offered another way to express generosity and strengthen community connections.
