From 17 July to 3 August, I embarked on an unforgettable journey across China, travelling through some of the country's most remarkable cities while experiencing its rich history, Buddhist heritage, advanced transportation systems, cutting-edge technology, and vibrant modern culture.
My adventure began in Shenzhen, one of China's most innovative and technologically advanced cities. Exploring Futian CBD, Gangxia North Station, and the famous Huaqiangbei Electronics Market gave me a firsthand look at why Shenzhen is considered the electronics capital of the world. The city's futuristic skyline, efficient metro system, and smart urban planning demonstrated China's remarkable technological progress.
From Shenzhen, I travelled to Guangzhou, a city where history and modern development coexist. I enjoyed its lively streets, cultural landmarks, shopping districts, and local cuisine before beginning one of the most meaningful parts of my journey.
Travelling approximately 900 kilometres by China's high-speed railway, I reached Quanzhou, one of China's oldest port cities and a historic gateway of the ancient Maritime Silk Road. There I had the honour of meeting Princess Xu Shi Yin'e, the 19th-generation descendant of King Parakramabahu VI of Sri Lanka. The warm welcome extended by her family was one of the most memorable moments of my entire journey and highlighted the centuries-old historical connections between Sri Lanka and China. During my stay, I also visited historic temples including Kaiyuan Temple and explored Quanzhou's unique cultural heritage.
Continuing my journey north, I travelled to Gongyi and then visited the world-famous Shaolin Temple in Henan Province. Walking through the birthplace of Shaolin Kung Fu and Chan (Zen) Buddhism, exploring the UNESCO-listed Pagoda Forest, and taking the cable car across the breathtaking Songshan Mountains provided an unforgettable spiritual and historical experience. I also visited Erzu Nunnery, one of the sacred sites connected to early Chan Buddhism.
My journey then continued to Luoyang, one of China's ancient capitals and an important centre of Chinese civilisation, before boarding an overnight sleeper train to Shanghai.
The overnight sleeper train journey from Gongyi to Shanghai, covering more than 1,000 kilometres in around 12 hours, became another memorable experience. After a comfortable night's rest, I woke to beautiful views of China's countryside, rivers, bridges, and villages as the train approached one of the world's greatest metropolitan cities.
In Chongqing, I experienced one of the most unique cities in the world. Built among mountains and rivers, Chongqing is famous for its dramatic skyline, multilayered roads, and remarkable engineering. Visiting Liziba Station, where a metro train passes directly through a residential building, perfectly demonstrated China's innovative urban planning. I also travelled approximately 1,300 kilometres aboard one of China's world-famous G-series high-speed trains, experiencing one of the fastest railway systems on Earth.
My stay in Shanghai revealed another face of modern China. I explored the historic Wukang Building, admired the peaceful surroundings of Jing'an Temple and the Jade Buddha Temple, experienced the city's world-class metro system, visited modern shopping districts, and enjoyed spectacular night views of the illuminated Oriental Pearl Tower. Shanghai beautifully showcased the harmony between ancient Buddhist heritage and one of the world's most advanced financial centres.
The final stage of my journey brought me back to Shenzhen by domestic flight. Returning to the city allowed me to further explore its vibrant shopping districts, modern architecture, technology markets, and energetic nightlife before preparing for my international journey back to Qatar.
Throughout the tour, I travelled by high-speed bullet trains, overnight sleeper trains, metro systems, cable cars, buses, taxis, and domestic flights, experiencing one of the world's most efficient transportation networks. Every journey demonstrated China's remarkable commitment to speed, connectivity, and engineering excellence.
More importantly, this was far more than a sightseeing holiday. It was an educational and cultural expedition that allowed me to experience the history of Buddhism, the legacy of ancient Chinese civilisation, the deep historical friendship between China and Sri Lanka, and the extraordinary technological transformation that has shaped modern China.
Every destination offered a different story—from sacred temples and UNESCO heritage sites to futuristic cities and world-class transportation systems. Every experience enriched my understanding of China and left me with unforgettable memories that I will treasure for the rest of my life.
China is a nation where thousands of years of history stand proudly beside the innovations of tomorrow, and this remarkable journey allowed me to experience both worlds in a single unforgettable adventure.
