Journey Scapes Official Website
Project Overview
The Journey Scapes corporate website was designed and developed by Isura Wickramarachchi in 2007 as the official online presence for Journey Scapes (Pvt) Limited, one of Sri Lanka's leading inbound tour operators. The website introduced the company's philosophy of "Maximum Flexibility, Genuine Care", while presenting Sri Lanka as a destination for customised and high-quality travel experiences. Over the years, Journey Scapes has grown into a well-established inbound tour operator, specialising in tailor-made holidays for international travellers.
Unlike the specialised category websites, this was designed as the main corporate website, bringing together the company's services, destination information, travel resources, and links to its specialised tourism websites.
Design & Structure
The design was created to represent Sri Lanka as a complete travel destination while maintaining a clean and professional corporate identity.
A panoramic header featuring Sri Lanka's iconic hill-country railway immediately establishes the country's unique character. The homepage is divided into visually balanced sections using colourful circular content panels, destination photography, featured itineraries, luxury accommodation, and an interactive map of Sri Lanka.
Rather than presenting long blocks of text, the homepage guides visitors through carefully organised content areas including holiday themes, accommodation, destination highlights, travel advice, and suggested itineraries. The right-hand column acts as a navigation hub, linking visitors to specialised travel websites and important travel resources.
The structure allows visitors to quickly move from general information about Sri Lanka to highly specialised holiday experiences.
Unique Design Concept
The Journey Scapes website was designed as the central hub of a much larger digital marketing strategy.
Instead of developing one large tourism website covering every type of holiday, I proposed creating multiple specialised tourism websites, each focusing on a single travel niche. The corporate website acted as the gateway connecting these individual websites, including:
- Wildlife Tours in Sri Lanka
- Beach Holidays in Sri Lanka
- Heritage Tours in Sri Lanka
- Sri Lanka Holidays in Villas
- Luxurious Tours in Sri Lanka
- Classical Sri Lanka Tours
This was a highly innovative SEO strategy for 2007. Each website targeted a different group of search keywords while the corporate website strengthened the overall brand identity. Visitors searching for specific holiday experiences were directed to dedicated websites with focused content, significantly improving search engine visibility and user engagement.
The website also placed strong emphasis on travel planning by including practical information such as travel tips, flight schedules, Ayurveda, places of interest, destination guides, and customer reviews, making it a valuable resource before visitors even contacted the company.

Significance
The Journey Scapes Corporate Website represents one of the most strategically planned tourism web projects of my early career. Rather than functioning as a conventional company profile, it became the foundation of an integrated online marketing ecosystem that connected multiple specialised travel websites under a single corporate brand.
This architecture was developed years before content clustering and topic-based SEO became common practice. By combining a strong corporate identity with a network of niche tourism websites, Journey Scapes was able to improve its visibility across major search engines such as Google, Yahoo!, and MSN, while delivering highly targeted content for different types of travellers.
The project demonstrates my ability to combine creative web design, information architecture, branding, and long-term SEO strategy into a cohesive digital solution. It also marked one of my most comprehensive tourism web initiatives, contributing to the continued online growth of Journey Scapes as one of Sri Lanka's recognised inbound tour operators.

And at this year’s ITB, FTI was actually honoured with the Gold Award for bringing in the highest number of German tourists to the country. We also have over 30 tour operators working with us from different parts of the world, mostly from Europe and the UK. Some of them are specialists in designer tours and cater to an affluent and discerning clientele. So we make regular reservations, and are quite aware of the needs of this customer and what is available in the market.
