Project Overview

The Mangala Motors website was designed and developed in 2006 by Isura Wickramarachchi as the official online showroom for one of Sri Lanka's leading used vehicle dealers. Developed using PHP and MySQL, the project introduced a fully dynamic vehicle management system that enabled the company to publish and update its inventory in real time without requiring manual HTML editing.

The website was created to simplify the process of buying and selling vehicles by allowing customers to browse available stock, search for vehicles based on their preferences, and obtain detailed information before visiting the showroom. In an era when most Sri Lankan vehicle dealers still relied on newspaper advertisements and static websites, Mangala Motors provided one of the country's earliest interactive online vehicle marketplaces.

Design & Structure

The website features a clean, modern automotive-inspired interface designed to reflect speed, reliability, and professionalism. The homepage immediately captures attention with a large hero image of a luxury sports car positioned beneath flowing blue graphical elements that create a sense of movement and performance.

The overall layout is organised into three functional sections. The left-hand navigation allows visitors to browse different vehicle categories, the centre displays the latest available vehicles with photographs and specifications, while the right-hand sidebar contains an advanced vehicle search system together with a featured "Car of the Month" section.

The colour scheme combines blue, silver, white, and grey, colours traditionally associated with technology, engineering, and the automotive industry. Rounded interface panels, soft gradients, and smooth curves create a contemporary appearance that was considerably ahead of many automotive websites developed in Sri Lanka during 2006.

Unique Design Concept

The project was designed around the concept of bringing the physical showroom onto the internet. Instead of simply displaying a list of vehicles, the homepage recreated the experience of browsing an organised showroom where visitors could compare vehicles, search by specifications, and view featured models.

Significance

The Mangala Motors project represents one of Isura Wickramarachchi's early dynamic business management systems developed specifically for the Sri Lankan automotive industry. At a time when online vehicle marketplaces were still in their infancy, the website introduced functionality that significantly improved both customer experience and dealership operations.

Rather than functioning as a digital brochure, the website became a live online showroom, allowing customers to search inventory, compare vehicles, and make more informed purchasing decisions before visiting the dealership. The dynamic PHP/MySQL architecture also enabled staff to manage inventory efficiently, ensuring that newly available vehicles and sold vehicles could be updated quickly.

The project reflects Isura Wickramarachchi's philosophy of combining creative interface design with practical business functionality. Through its modern automotive styling, advanced search capabilities, and database-driven inventory management, the Mangala Motors website demonstrated how custom web applications could transform traditional businesses into efficient online enterprises. More than two decades later, it remains an excellent example of early automotive web development in Sri Lanka, illustrating how thoughtful user experience design and dynamic technology could deliver significant commercial value.
