Watermark Products
Project Overview
The Watermark Products website was designed and developed in 2006 by Isura Wickramarachchi in collaboration with Webb & Flow (USA) as the official website for Peter Driscoll, a renowned American scrimshaw artist and craftsman. The website was created to showcase his handcrafted artwork, promote exhibitions, present his biography, and provide customers with an easy way to purchase original pieces through an online ordering system.
Developed as a static HTML website, the project served as both an artist portfolio and a marketing platform, allowing collectors, galleries, and art enthusiasts to explore Peter Driscoll's work while keeping up to date with exhibitions, news, and upcoming events.
Rather than functioning as a simple online gallery, the website was designed to reflect the craftsmanship, heritage, and timeless elegance associated with traditional scrimshaw art.
Design & Structure
The website features a highly original handcrafted visual concept, making it one of the most distinctive artist websites of its time. Instead of using conventional navigation panels or corporate layouts, the homepage was designed around the idea of an artist's wooden workbench, immediately creating an authentic connection with Peter Driscoll's profession.
One of the most remarkable design elements is the large wooden desk integrated into the header, complete with framed artwork, drawing tools, and handcrafted objects placed naturally on its surface. Rather than simply decorating the page, this workbench became part of the storytelling, making visitors feel as though they had entered the artist's own studio.
The homepage is divided into two functional areas. A vertical navigation panel on the left provides access to galleries, exhibitions, biography, and ordering information, while the central content area introduces the artist and highlights his latest work. Warm earth tones, textured wood surfaces, and parchment-inspired backgrounds reinforce the handcrafted nature of the artwork.
The overall interface successfully combines illustration, photography, and textured graphics into a seamless artistic presentation.
Unique Design Concept
The defining feature of the project is its studio-inspired interface, where the website itself becomes part of the artist's creative environment.

Significance
The Watermark Products project represents one of Isura Wickramarachchi's most creative international artist websites, demonstrating how web design could become an extension of an artist's personality and craft rather than simply displaying artwork online.
Instead of following conventional gallery-style layouts, the website introduced an immersive studio environment, allowing visitors to experience Peter Driscoll's craftsmanship from the moment the homepage loaded. The innovative wooden workbench concept, textured handcrafted interface, and carefully integrated artistic elements created a unique visual identity that perfectly complemented the tradition of scrimshaw art.
The project reflects Isura Wickramarachchi's philosophy of creating fully customized, handcrafted websites where every design element supports the client's profession and brand story. More than two decades later, the Watermark Products website remains an excellent example of early artist portfolio web design, demonstrating how creativity, storytelling, and thoughtful interface design could transform a simple portfolio into a memorable digital experience.
Lithography and Art have been Pete's passion since his youth in Wisconsin. Now, after years spent working in different media, Pete is turning much of his attention to the art of scrimshaw. A sailor who knows the maritime tradition, he moved to North Carolina in 1991 after traveling on his 41-foot Ketch sailboat for three years.
He is married to Jo Whitten May, a Speech Pathologist. They live in Bermuda Run, NC, and own two Springer Spaniels, a cat, and a rowboat. His current passion is Scrimshaw and owning Watermark Products. Pete's research and study of the arts of scrimshaw and engraving have provided the inspiration to carry on this orginal American art form.
