Carolyn Booth Official Website
Project Overview
The Carolyn R. Booth website was designed and developed in 2005 by Isura Wickramarachchi in collaboration with Webb & Flow (USA) as the official online presence for American author Carolyn R. Booth. The website was created to promote her novels, historical publications, speaking engagements, newsletters, and literary events while providing readers with a convenient way to purchase books through an email-based ordering system. Carolyn R. Booth is the author of Between the Rivers and other historical fiction and nonfiction works focused on North Carolina history.
Developed as a static HTML website, the project functioned as both a promotional platform and an online literary showcase. Before integrated e-commerce became common for independent authors, the website allowed visitors to browse publications and submit book purchase enquiries through contact forms rather than a payment gateway.
Design & Structure
The website features a warm, handcrafted literary design inspired by classic books, historical storytelling, and traditional publishing. Rather than following the clean corporate layouts common in 2005, the interface resembles the pages of an old novel, creating an atmosphere that immediately reflects the author's writing style.
One of the website's most distinctive characteristics is its use of aged parchment textures, torn paper edges, and rich earthy colours. The background and content panels appear as though they are part of an antique manuscript, giving the website a timeless and authentic appearance.
The homepage is organised into three balanced sections. A textured navigation panel on the left provides access to the author's publications and resources, the centre displays featured content and book information, while the right-hand column showcases the author's portrait together with featured books and promotional highlights.
Decorative brushstroke textures, vintage typography, and carefully integrated book cover images combine to create a unique visual identity that was highly uncommon among author websites during the mid-2000s.

Significance
The Carolyn R. Booth project demonstrates how an author's website could become a digital extension of their literary identity rather than simply serving as an online biography. Through its handcrafted textures, book-inspired interface, and carefully integrated visual storytelling, the website created an immersive reading experience before visitors even opened one of the author's books.
The project reflects Isura Wickramarachchi's philosophy of designing unique, handcrafted websites that capture each client's personality and profession. By combining original artwork, historical design elements, and practical features such as book enquiries and author resources, the website stood apart from conventional literary websites of the mid-2000s. More than two decades later, the archived site remains an excellent example of early author-focused web design, demonstrating how thoughtful interface design could strengthen an author's brand while creating a memorable experience for readers.
