Sinhala Cinema Database 2020 - Redesign
ව්‍යාපෘතිය පිළිබඳව

Project Overview

The Films.lk website was redesigned and developed by Isura Wickramarachchi in 2020, marking the fourth major evolution of Sri Lanka's largest online Sinhala cinema database. Following the successful releases in 2009, 2011, and 2017, this generation focused on performance, simplicity, mobile-friendly content presentation, and long-term scalability while continuing the project's mission of digitally preserving the history of Sinhala cinema.

The redesign introduced a modern, magazine-style homepage that emphasised film posters, artist photography, news, and historical records while reducing visual complexity. Navigation was simplified, search functionality was improved, and the content management system was further enhanced to efficiently manage one of the largest entertainment databases in Sri Lanka.

By this stage, the archive had grown to include more than 11,500 artist profiles, over 2,200 Sinhala film records, and more than 14,000 photographs, making Films.lk the definitive online reference for Sinhala cinema.

Significance

The 2020 redesign of Films.lk represents the culmination of more than a decade of continuous development by Isura Wickramarachchi. Beginning with the original website in 2009, followed by major redesigns in 2011 and 2017, the fourth-generation platform modernised every aspect of the user experience while preserving the project's core mission of documenting and safeguarding Sri Lanka's cinematic heritage.

Rather than introducing unnecessary complexity, the redesign concentrated on speed, accessibility, and efficient presentation of an ever-expanding collection of films, artists, photographs, and historical records. The streamlined interface enabled visitors to explore the archive more naturally while providing administrators with a robust platform capable of managing tens of thousands of database records.

With more than 11,500 artist profiles, over 2,200 Sinhala film records, and 14,000+ photographs, Films.lk further strengthened its position as Sri Lanka's largest and most comprehensive online Sinhala cinema database. The platform has become an invaluable resource for filmmakers, researchers, journalists, students, historians, and cinema enthusiasts, preserving more than seven decades of Sinhala film history in digital form.

The evolution of Films.lk across four major generations (2009, 2011, 2017, and 2020) demonstrates Isura Wickramarachchi's long-term commitment to combining technology with cultural preservation. The original 2009 version received national recognition by winning the Best Entertainment Website Award at the BestWeb.LK 2009 competition, and each subsequent redesign expanded upon that award-winning foundation to ensure the archive remained technologically modern, historically accurate, and freely accessible to audiences around the world.

Isura Wickramarachchi is a Sri Lankan author, historical researcher, web technology innovator, and social entrepreneur. He is best known as the creator of "Mahawansa Pradeepikawa", a comprehensive historical publication that presents the genealogy, portraits, and history of nearly 200 Sri Lankan monarchs in a modern, visually engaging format. The project combines historical research with digital technology, featuring QR codes that connect readers to an online knowledge platform containing expanded historical content, videos, and interactive resources.

Beginning his career in the fields of tourism and information technology, Wickramarachchi later founded isandi CREATIONS, one of Sri Lanka's pioneering web development companies. Over the past two decades, he has designed and developed hundreds of websites for clients in Sri Lanka and overseas. His award-winning projects include films.lk, Sri Lanka's first dedicated Sinhala cinema website, and mahawansaya.com, a digital platform preserving and promoting Sri Lankan history.

Driven by a passion for making history accessible to younger generations, Wickramarachchi spent approximately ten years researching more than 300 historical sources to produce Mahawansa Pradeepikawa. The 650-page, full-colour publication contains over 200 reconstructed royal portraits, more than 180 family trees, and detailed references designed to help readers understand the evolution of Sri Lanka's royal lineage. The work integrates traditional scholarship with modern visual learning techniques to encourage children and young adults to appreciate the nation's heritage.

Beyond his work as an author and technology professional, Wickramarachchi has actively contributed to numerous community development initiatives, including educational support programs, projects for children with special needs, blood donation campaigns, school infrastructure improvements, and digital literacy initiatives.
