www.cinema.lk
Sinhala Cinema Search Engine
ව්‍යාපෘතිය පිළිබඳව

Project Overview

Cinema.lk was conceived, designed, and developed by Isura Wickramarachchi in 2009 as a dedicated search engine for Sinhala cinema. Unlike a conventional cinema website, Cinema.lk was built specifically to help users quickly locate information related to Sinhala films, artists, photographs, award ceremonies, and cinema halls from a single search interface.

The search engine was closely integrated with the Films.lk cinema database, providing visitors with fast access to thousands of records through a simple and user-friendly search experience.

The service remained online until 2011, after which it was discontinued as development efforts were consolidated into the continuously expanding Films.lk platform.

Design & Structure

The website adopted a minimalistic and search-focused interface, inspired by leading search engines of the time. The clean white layout ensured that users could immediately focus on searching the Sinhala cinema database without unnecessary distractions.

  • Search category selection.
  • Central search box.
  • Direct search button.

Significance

Cinema.lk represented one of the earliest dedicated vertical search engines developed in Sri Lanka for a single knowledge domain. Designed by Isura Wickramarachchi, the platform demonstrated how specialised search technology could make large collections of cultural and historical information easily accessible through a simple interface.

By providing a focused search experience for Sinhala cinema, the project complemented the extensive Films.lk database and improved public access to information about artists, films, cinema halls, photographs, and award ceremonies. Although the service was discontinued in 2011, it remains an important milestone in the evolution of Sri Lanka's digital cinema archives and reflects Isura Wickramarachchi's commitment to preserving and promoting Sinhala cinema through innovative web technology.
