Presentation of Appointment Letters to Job Recipients in Homagama
THE STORY

Date: 24 October 2020
Location: Homagama, Sri Lanka
Occasion: 100,000 Jobs Programme for Low-Income Families

In 2020, the Government implemented a programme through the Multi-Purpose Development Task Force to create 100,000 employment opportunities for people from low-income families. Under its first phase, 34,818 individuals were selected for training and employment. The initiative was linked to then-President Gotabaya Rajapaksa's Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour (Saubhagyaye Dekma) policy framework.

As part of this programme, an event was held in Homagama on 24 October 2020 to present appointment letters to selected recipients from the area. Colombo District Member of Parliament Premnath C. Dolawatta participated in presenting the appointments, and I also had the opportunity to attend the occasion.

The photographs also preserve an aspect of the period itself. With the country facing the COVID-19 pandemic, participants can be seen wearing face masks and seating was arranged with considerable spacing.

Nationally, those selected under the programme were to receive six months of formal training, with a monthly training allowance, before being directed to relevant areas of public-sector employment according to the programme's arrangements. LankaWeb
