One of the memorable experiences of my school years was participating in the St. John Ambulance Brigade Passing-Out Ceremony held at Ananda Sastralaya College, Pitakotte, in 1993.
Being part of the St. John Ambulance Brigade gave me an opportunity to experience discipline, teamwork, responsibility and the importance of service at a young age. Taking part in the ceremony in uniform was therefore more than simply a school event; it represented the training and commitment associated with being a member of the Brigade.
These photographs preserve moments from that day, including the formal parade and members of the Brigade assembled in uniform. Looking at them many years later brings back memories of a period of my life shaped by school activities, discipline and working together with others.
Looking back at my later involvement in community and social-service initiatives, I consider experiences such as this to have been among my early introductions to the values of service, responsibility and teamwork—values that continued to have meaning throughout the years that followed.
