This photograph was taken in the living room of our family home at Galmolawatta, Homagama, in 1985. It preserves a precious moment from my childhood and an important family occasion.
The photograph was taken during my younger sister’s coming-of-age celebration. Together in this photograph are my elder sister, younger sister, brother, my maternal uncle’s son, my elder aunt’s son and daughter, and me.
Looking at the photograph today also brings back memories of our home and everyday family life during the 1980s—the old television, wooden furniture, floral decorations and the clothing styles of that period all preserve small details of the world in which we grew up.
The photograph carries an additional emotional significance because my elder aunt’s son, who appears here with us, passed away in 1994. It therefore preserves not only a happy childhood gathering but also the memory of a beloved family member who is no longer with us.
More than forty years later, this photograph has become much more than a record of a family celebration. It is a window into our childhood, our family bonds, our old home, and a moment in time when we were all together—a moment that can never be recreated, but can always be remembered.
