On 01 October 2012, I visited Pooneryn in Northern Sri Lanka, a few years after the end of the country's civil war. The visit provided a unique opportunity to witness firsthand the transformation of a region that had remained inaccessible for decades and was gradually rebuilding through peace and post-war development.
During the visit, I explored areas that had been affected by the conflict, including former military zones, reconstruction projects, coastal areas, and the surrounding natural landscape. It was possible to observe the ongoing efforts to restore infrastructure, revive local communities, and support the return to normal civilian life.
The journey offered valuable insight into Sri Lanka's post-war recovery and national reconciliation process. Beyond sightseeing, it provided an opportunity to better understand the challenges of rebuilding communities after conflict and to appreciate the importance of peace, unity, and sustainable development. The visit to Pooneryn remains a meaningful experience that deepened my understanding of Sri Lanka's recent history and the resilience of its people.
