MICDA Official Website
Project Overview
The MICD Associates website was designed and developed in 2006 by Isura Wickramarachchi as the official corporate website for one of Sri Lanka's leading architectural design firms.
Built as a static HTML website, the project was developed to showcase the firm's extensive architectural portfolio, professional expertise, and multidisciplinary design services. The website introduced visitors to the company's philosophy, completed projects, and specialist sectors while presenting MICD Associates as a modern architectural practice serving both Sri Lanka and international clients.
The project was designed to reflect the firm's commitment to innovative architecture, planning, and interior design through a minimalist interface that allowed the architectural work itself to remain the primary focus.
Design & Structure
The website follows a minimalist architectural design language, emphasizing simplicity, structure, and visual balance rather than decorative graphics.
The homepage is organised around a striking dark monochromatic colour palette, immediately creating a premium and sophisticated appearance that complements the architectural profession. A vertical navigation panel positioned along the left side provides access to every specialist discipline, while the main content area presents detailed company information in a clean reading layout.
One of the website's most distinctive visual elements is the folded paper effect at the top corner of the main content panel, giving the impression that the page has been physically turned over. This subtle graphical feature added depth without distracting from the content.
The design also incorporates clean typography, thin red accent lines, and restrained use of imagery, allowing the firm's projects and architectural philosophy to take centre stage. Every page maintained a consistent visual identity while providing dedicated sections for Residential, Commercial, Tourism & Leisure, Healthcare, Education, Interior Design, Restoration, Planning, and other specialist services.
The interface combines black, charcoal grey, white, and red, creating an elegant corporate identity that reflects precision, professionalism, and contemporary architectural design.
Unique Design Concept
Unlike many corporate websites of 2006 that relied on colourful graphics and large promotional banners, the MICD Associates website embraced the principles of minimalist architecture through its own interface design.
The website intentionally reduced unnecessary graphical elements, using negative space, structured alignment, and carefully balanced typography to create a calm and professional user experience. The restrained colour palette allowed visitors to focus on the firm's expertise rather than decorative interface elements.
The left-hand vertical navigation became an integral part of the design rather than simply a menu, creating a strong architectural grid that remained consistent across every page. The folded paper corner, subtle gradients, and clean geometric layout demonstrated a level of interface sophistication that was uncommon among architectural websites during the mid-2000s.

Significance
The MICD Associates project demonstrates Isura Wickramarachchi's ability to tailor website design to the identity of each client rather than applying a standard corporate template. Instead of creating a visually busy promotional website, he developed a sophisticated interface that reflected the principles of modern architecture—simplicity, balance, precision, and functionality.
The project illustrates his understanding that good web design should communicate a company's profession before visitors even begin reading the content. Through its restrained colour palette, structured layout, and carefully crafted graphical details, the website successfully reinforced MICD Associates' reputation as a professional architectural practice while providing an elegant platform for presenting its diverse portfolio.
More than two decades later, the MICD Associates website remains an excellent example of profession-specific interface design, demonstrating how thoughtful visual direction and custom-crafted layouts could successfully express an architectural brand long before modern responsive frameworks and content management systems became the industry standard.
MICD Associates is an architectural design firm formed in 1997 by its principals Murad Ismai l and Channa Daswatte after meeting within the practice of Geoffrey Bawa Associates, of which they are still both Directors.
MICD Associates has a staff strength of over 50 and is predominantlya design firm Committed to innovative and rigorous architectural design, the principals maintain a close relationship with the client and are the principals designers. The main concern of the practice have been to create architecture that is appropriate to site climate and culture using to advantage the materials of everyday construction including freely available industrial materials. Lightness of structure and form and connection with the landscape and environment has been particularly important to the design approach. Being primarily a design-oriented company has enabled total commitment to this aspect of the profession. Consortium services are provided in association with committed professionals and companies that deal with the other disciplines of building design.
The interior design division is headed by Anika Fernando together with Murad Ismail and Channa Daswatte and the partnership is named MICDAF design private limited.
