ABOUT THE PROJECT

Project Overview

The FCCISL Back to Business (B2B) Project website was designed and developed in 2006 by Isura Wickramarachchi as a dynamic PHP/MySQL web portal for the Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sri Lanka (FCCISL).

The project was created to support one of Sri Lanka's largest private-sector rehabilitation initiatives following the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. The programme focused on rebuilding livelihoods by assisting Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), supporting affected communities, coordinating funding agencies, implementation partners, and reporting ongoing project activities.

Rather than serving as a simple organizational website, the portal became a centralized information and project management platform where stakeholders could publish news, document field activities, manage partner information, and communicate project progress to donors, government agencies, and the public.

Design & Structure

The website features a professional NGO and development-sector interface, designed to present large amounts of project information in a clear and organized manner.

The homepage is divided into several functional information zones.

A prominent header introduces the Back to Business (B2B) initiative with a banner highlighting FCCISL's leadership in post-tsunami economic recovery. The banner combines humanitarian imagery with corporate branding, immediately communicating the project's social mission.

The left column contains Past Events, displaying recent field activities with photographs and summaries, while the centre section showcases featured development projects, detailed articles, and rehabilitation updates.

The right-hand column presents News & Events, project announcements, and project statistics, creating a complete information dashboard for visitors.

A secure user login panel positioned near the top of the homepage allows authorized users to access protected project management functions, indicating that the system supported both public visitors and registered administrators.

The interface combines blue, orange, white, and grey, creating a professional appearance that balances government, nonprofit, and corporate branding while maintaining excellent readability.

Unique Design Concept

One of the most innovative aspects of the FCCISL B2B website was its ability to combine content management, project reporting, and stakeholder communication within a single web application.

Instead of functioning as a conventional corporate website, the homepage operated as a live project dashboard, where visitors could immediately view recent events, development activities, funding information, implementation updates, and community rehabilitation progress.

The modular design enabled different types of information to be displayed simultaneously without overwhelming users, making it particularly suitable for large development programmes involving multiple organizations.

Significance

The FCCISL Back to Business (B2B) project represents one of Isura Wickramarachchi's most significant development-sector web applications, created to support a nationwide economic recovery programme following one of the most devastating natural disasters in Sri Lanka's history.

Rather than developing a traditional informational website, Isura designed a comprehensive digital platform that enabled FCCISL to communicate with funding agencies, implementation partners, businesses, and affected communities through a centralized online system. The project combined content management, event reporting, project monitoring, and stakeholder communication into a single integrated solution, making it a valuable operational tool as well as a public information portal.

The website demonstrates Isura Wickramarachchi's ability to develop mission-critical web applications for large organizations where reliability, information organization, and usability were essential. Through its structured portal layout, dynamic database architecture, and comprehensive project management features, the FCCISL B2B website successfully supported one of Sri Lanka's largest private-sector rehabilitation initiatives while showcasing how custom PHP/MySQL development could address complex real-world challenges. More than two decades later, it remains an excellent example of early development-sector portal design and large-scale information management systems.
