Project Overview
NowGem Jewellers was designed and developed by Isura Wickramarachchi in 2008 as a dynamic online jewellery and gemstone catalogue with e-commerce functionality. Built using PHP/MySQL, the website enabled the company to showcase its collection of precious gemstones and fine jewellery while allowing customers to browse products and add selected items to a shopping cart.
The website was created to strengthen the company's international online presence by promoting Sri Lankan gemstones, jewellery collections, and custom jewellery services through a professional and visually engaging platform.
Design & Structure
The website featured a luxurious, gemstone-inspired design using vibrant shades of orange, blue, and white. The colourful gemstone banner immediately captured visitors' attention while reinforcing the company's expertise in precious gems and fine jewellery.
The homepage was organised into several distinct sections:
- Top Banner: Featured premium gemstone photography and the main navigation menu.
- Company Introduction: A clean content panel introducing the company, its history, and expertise in gemstones and jewellery.
- Product Showcase: A dynamic grid displaying featured gemstone and jewellery products managed through the database.
- Category Navigation: Quick links to various gemstone collections and jewellery categories for easy browsing.
The spacious layout and elegant colour scheme ensured the products remained the primary visual focus throughout the website.
Unique Design Concept
The website was designed around the concept of "Luxury Through Colour." The rich orange tones represented precious gemstones, while the deep blue background conveyed elegance and trust, creating an online showroom that reflected the premium nature of the brand.
Rather than functioning as a simple corporate website, the platform combined product management, category navigation, and shopping cart functionality into a complete digital catalogue, allowing customers to comfortably browse jewellery collections before making enquiries or purchases.

D&J Rare Gems was founded by Donna and John Rhoads in 1985 as a source for rare gems for the gemologist and collector. Initially a mail order company for rare gems, D&Rare Gems expanded into fine gems in 1988. Lapidary services were added in 1989, providing well cut fine and rare gems to the industry. In 1990 we opened our retail jewelry store in Salida, Colorado offering fine jewelry, wholesale gemstones, and mineral and crystals to the public as well as gemstone cutting and repair.
