Lecture on Social Media Poster Design for the Ministry of Buddhasasana
THE STORY

Date: 21 February 2021
Institution: Ministry of Buddhasasana, Sri Lanka
Programme: Professional Awareness Lecture for Media Division Members
Topic: Social Media Poster Design and Graphic Communication
Lecturer: Isura Wickramarachchi
Field: Graphic Design, Digital Media and Visual Communication

On 21 February 2021, I delivered a lecture on social media poster design for members of the Media Division of Sri Lanka's Ministry of Buddhasasana.

The session provided an opportunity to share the professional knowledge and practical experience I had gained over many years as a graphic designer and website developer. The central purpose was to explain how visual design can be used to communicate information effectively through social media platforms.

A social media poster is more than a decorative image. It is a communication tool designed to deliver a specific message clearly, attract attention, and help an audience understand information quickly.

Effective poster design involves several important principles, including typography, colour combinations, image selection, information hierarchy, layout, and visual balance. These elements become particularly relevant when preparing institutional announcements, event promotions, awareness campaigns, and public information materials.

For a government media division, the accuracy of published information is essential. However, the visual presentation of that information is equally important in making it accessible and understandable to the public. The subject of the lecture therefore connected graphic design principles with the wider purpose of effective institutional communication.

I drew upon my experience in website development, promotional artwork, and digital media design to approach the subject from a practical perspective. Understanding the purpose of a design, its intended audience, and the platform on which it will appear are fundamental considerations in professional visual communication.

Photographs from the occasion show me delivering the presentation from a podium in an auditorium, with participants seated in front of a projection screen. I was wearing a face mask, reflecting the public health precautions observed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Throughout my professional career, I have viewed graphic design not only as a commercial profession but also as a means of communicating knowledge, information, and ideas. Sharing the skills and experience gained through that work has been another meaningful way of contributing to others.

This lecture, delivered on 21 February 2021, forms part of my personal and professional timeline as an example of my contribution to developing practical graphic design and digital communication awareness among media personnel within a government institution.
