Date: 10 March 2021
Institution: Ministry of Buddhasasana, Sri Lanka
Programme: Professional Awareness Lecture for Media Division Members
Topic: Social Media Usage, Practices and Methodologies
Lecturer: Isura Wickramarachchi
Field: Digital Media, Communication and Professional Knowledge Sharing
On 10 March 2021, I delivered a lecture on social media usage and methodologies for members of the Media Division of Sri Lanka's Ministry of Buddhasasana.
The session provided an opportunity to share the professional knowledge I had gained through my work in website development, digital media, and internet-based communication. Being able to contribute that experience to personnel working within a government institution was a meaningful milestone in my professional journey.
The lecture focused on social media practices and the ways digital platforms could be used effectively for communication. The broader subject included the potential of online platforms to distribute institutional information and the importance of approaching digital communication in an organized and purposeful manner.
The responsibilities of a government media division extend beyond providing information to conventional news outlets. Digital platforms create opportunities for institutions to communicate more directly with the public, making practical knowledge of social media increasingly relevant to media personnel.
The programme also took place during the COVID-19 pandemic, when digital communication had become particularly important. Restrictions on physical gatherings and conventional forms of interaction had increased the need for accessible online communication and timely public information.
Photographs from the occasion show me delivering the lecture from a podium in a presentation hall equipped with a computer, projection screen, and audio facilities. I was wearing a face mask, reflecting the public health precautions observed during that period.
Throughout my professional career, I have considered the sharing of practical knowledge an important way to contribute beyond my regular design and development work. Opportunities such as this allowed me to apply my experience in digital technologies and communication to the professional development of others.
This lecture, delivered on 10 March 2021, forms part of my personal and professional timeline as an example of my contribution to knowledge sharing and digital communication awareness within a government institution in Sri Lanka.
