Sri TV Australia
Project Overview
The Sri TV Australia website was designed and developed in 2006 by Isura Wickramarachchi as the official online platform for Sri TV, one of the early Sinhala-language television initiatives serving the Sri Lankan community in Australia.
Developed as a static HTML website enhanced with JavaScript slideshow technology, the project was created to promote Sri TV's television programmes, community initiatives, sponsors, and organisational activities. The website introduced viewers to the station's mission while providing programme information, sponsor recognition, community links, and contact details for Sri Lankans living throughout Australia.
According to the archived website, Sri TV had been producing Sinhala-language entertainment and cultural programmes in Australia since August 2004, offering news, current affairs, interviews, music, lifestyle features, and community-focused programming for the Australian Sri Lankan community.
Design & Structure
The website features a modern television-inspired interface built around strong visual branding and multimedia presentation. Rather than adopting a conventional corporate layout, the design reflects the identity of a television network by combining large promotional graphics with structured content panels.
The homepage is divided into three functional sections.
The left navigation panel provides access to the main areas of the website, including the organisation's mission, team members, useful links, sponsors, and contact information. An archive section below allows visitors to browse previous monthly updates, creating a simple chronological content structure.
The centre section introduces Sri TV through a welcoming message explaining its programming and objectives. A large banner featuring the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge immediately establishes the Australian identity of the television station while maintaining a strong connection to the Sri Lankan community.
The right sidebar is dedicated to sponsor recognition, highlighting commercial partners that supported the television network. This created an effective balance between community information and commercial visibility.
The website uses a striking combination of black, green, and grey, accented with warm orange highlights. This colour palette creates a modern broadcast aesthetic while ensuring excellent readability and strong visual contrast.
Unique Design Concept
One of the most distinctive aspects of the Sri TV project was its ability to combine community television branding with modern web presentation.
Instead of functioning as a simple information website, the homepage was designed to resemble the front page of a television network, where news, programming, archives, sponsors, and organisational information were immediately available.
The integration of a JavaScript slideshow added movement and visual interest at a time when many websites still relied entirely on static images, providing visitors with a more engaging browsing experience without requiring Flash technology.

Significance
The Sri TV Australia project represents one of Isura Wickramarachchi's international community media websites, developed during a period when diaspora organisations were increasingly using the internet to connect communities across different countries. By providing a dedicated online presence for a Sinhala-language television station in Australia, the website helped strengthen communication between Sri TV and the growing Sri Lankan community living overseas.
The project also demonstrates Isura's ability to design websites specifically for the media and broadcasting sector. Rather than creating a conventional corporate website, he developed a television-inspired interface featuring dynamic JavaScript effects, structured programme information, sponsor visibility, and community-oriented navigation. The use of Australian landmarks alongside Sri Lankan cultural branding effectively communicated the station's dual identity—serving Sri Lankans while operating within Australia.
More than two decades later, the project remains an excellent example of early community broadcasting web design, illustrating how thoughtful branding, multimedia presentation, and user-friendly navigation could successfully support an ethnic television network in building its online presence and engaging with audiences across Australia.
SRI TV has been providing a variety of general entertainment programs to Sinhalese and English speaking Sri Lankan audiences in Australia and worldwide since August 2004.
SRI TV's attractive menu includes news and current affairs programs, musical programs, trivia shows, lifestyle and magazine programs, interviews, cultural programs and more many of them produced in Australia by Sri Lankan youth.
